Open & Electric: Sun 2nd Oct 2011

(Apologies for the delay in getting this up! To be honest, I completely forgot about it!)

Conditions weren't great when we turned up. Low cloud and a fair breeze. Decision was taken to try and fly the electric first. After some discussion, we decided on a reduction in the motor time to keep the models out of the clouds! Brushless was reduced to 10 secs and brushed stayed at 60. This still left some of the models just touching the cloud at the end of their motor on time.

Pilot Rd 1  Rd 2 Rd 3 Total Place
Andrew 895 1000 953 2848 1
Paul 1000 620 1000 2620 2
Sam 479 364 457 1300 3
Jimmy 243 154 236 633 4
Mike 91 111 257 459 5

After 3 rounds Andrews consistent flying put him in first place. Congratulations.

Area Open Fly off & 100S Boyce Cup: 18th September 2011

An overcast day with a very weird looking sky. Wind was N- NW and gusty.

Rd 1 of the Area fly off saw Tommy land 24 secs after Andrew, both getting the landing bonus, giving Tommy a 47 point lead going in to Rd 2

Rd 2 was in totally different air and both struggled for any lift. Tommy's lighter loaded model a little less so and again he landed after Andrew winning by 124 in 2000

Pilot Rd 1 Rd 2 Total Place
Tommy 1000 1000 2000 1
Andrew 953 923 1876 2

Tommy wins the Area Open Thermal competition

100S

Again this was flown in air that went from buoyant to dead in the space of a few minutes. Very turbulent air at low level lead to a bit of damage, with Tommy and Andrew damaging models on landing and Paul, at his first event for several months, putting his in a tree and doing damage, this comp turned n to a bit of a war of attrition!

Pilot Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Rd 4 Total Place

Jimmy 297 212 466   975 6
Tommy 505       505 7

So Sam and Frank progressed to the fly off with conditions deteriorating further

Frank 1000 0 1000 2

Unfortunately Frank crashed on launch in Rd 2, so Sam wins the 100S Boyce Trophy

Open & Electric: Sun 14th Aug 2011

Poor conditions awaited us at Mallusk. Windy with a hint of rain the sky. We decided to wait a while and after a  heavy shower went through, conditions abated enough to justify running the event.

Things didn't go too well in round 1, Jimmy lost his model at low altitude in turbulence, Bill then lost his model on launch when it went in hard, (that'll teach him to check control orientation!)

Tommy got away well in this round, with everyone else scoring low. Rd 2 was the same, but Sam got away instead of Tommy. He repeated this in Rd 3 to win the competition, with Tommy in second.

We decided that the lightly loaded electric models would just be trashed in the conditions and decided not to run the electric.

Area Open Thermal Championships: Sun 31st July 2011

The forecast was a little iffy for this event and even on the day of the event it was very overcast and breezy.  Decision was taken to set out the winches and then see what the weather was doing. Once set up CD set out the rules for the days event. 5 rounds of 8  minutes, landing spot to count. Best 4 rounds to count Top 2 fly off. If at any point the CD felt there wouldn't be time for all 5 rounds, he would stop the event at the end of the current round and fly off the top 2 at that point. In the end this wasn't needed as we managed all 5 rounds.

Results below:

Pilot Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Rd 4 Rd 5 Total Place
Tommy 793 1000 0 910 819 3522 1

Mike 495 152 248 490 203 1436 10

At the end of 5 rounds Tommy and Andrew were the top 2, this despite Tommy clipping a tree on one landing approach and landing out of the field for a zero score!! This meant all 4 rounds had to score well..

Just as we were about to start the fly of, a light drizzle started. Both flyers agreed to fly and the first round of the fly off started. A couple of minutes in and heavier rain rolled in. Both pilots landed soon after saying that they had both lost sight of their models at points in the flight. As a result of this, the fly off was cancelled and will take place at the next event they're both at.

Terry Jones was again snapping away with his camera and most, ( all  bar 6!) of the pics below are his!

Open Thermal & Electric: Sun 3rd July 2011

Two great events in a row!!

Another good days flying with 3 rounds of open thermal & 3 rounds of electric soaring, with 10 competitors in open thermal & 8 in electric.

Conditions in the open were very variable with some flights finding lift and others sink! We also used a landing circle for the first time in several years and this required a bit more precision and some tactical thinking as to whether the 30 points for landing in the circle were worth more than a little more time. Some did, some didn't. One model was lost in open when the  pilot flew somebody else's model in error! We've all been there!

Electric found a bit more consistent air and several people flew close to the max. Landing bonuses were also in play in this event. Models varied from brushed cabin style models thru semi scale electric soarers to full competition type models.

Results for both events are below:

100S Cup: Sun 19th June 2011

FINALLY, we've managed to fly a thermal event!!!

This should have been the fourth event of the year and instead it's the first! The weather has been terrible and has prevented any of the previous events occurring. Today was the rescheduled 100S Cup and we managed to fly!

Eight fliers turned out, with Paul arriving after his shift. John Pearson had set out, but car trouble had forced him to turn back. There is a new turbine at the North end of the park and there was some concern over if this would cause any problems. Turned out there was light turbulence and not much else to bother us.

Four rounds of 8 minutes with a discard were flown. Some flights got away, others were a real struggle. One false turn or over correction lost quite a lot of height and dumped you right out of the lift.

Results below, discard in red

Pilot Rd 1 Rd 2 Rd 3 Rd 4 Total Placing
Sam 1000 600 1000 705 2705 1
Paul 539 728 885 1000 2613 2

Congratulations to Sam on a hard fought win

And there is a video of the event on the Video page

I think everyone enjoyed blowing away the cobwebs and getting models in the air. Open/electric in two weeks time

Slope Flying 27 Feb 2011

No flying as winds were too much for most of the club. A few members flew at other locations eg Binevenagh Mountain on the North Coast (Andrew Wallace) and Slieve Gallion, Moneymore, (John Pearson & Richard Boyd)

Slope Flying 13 Feb 2011

Not a competition, but the first time NIMSA flew together in 2011. Wind was forecast W - WSW ~12mph

Four of us turned out, Tommy, Stevie, John & Bill. Others were put off by the fact that it was Westerly which meant a reasonably strenuous climb up Craigy Hill!!

Lift was patchy and straight off Tommy found hw had a problem with the RX Battery in his Enigma. This was quickly remedied by taking the battery from Bills' Limit. John tested the air with his Extreme. Tommy and Bill then tried with their EPP models, an Enigma & a Ricoshe. Tommy had along walk down hill to fetch his model and Bill cracked the fuz of his model. A cup of coffee was called for by Bill & Tommy while they waited on the wind to pick up! John continued to fly, having the ability to change camber on his full house model.

The wind picked up some and everyone got a good couple of flights. Unfortunately it died as quickly as it started and Bill removed the wing bolts on his model trying to force it down when he should just have gone round again!

All in all a good day out, much milder than expected and we all blew the cobwebs from our fingers!
